Share some ancient foods of any kind that are healthy or medicinal.
In Japan, one has recently been on my mind & palette: KONNYAKU
>>>Konnyaku is a marvellous health food
It does not have fat, it is rich in dietary fibre and is low in calories. Moreover, it has recently been found that it normalises the level of cholesterol, prevents high blood pressure and normalises the level of sugar in the blood. Because of these scientific findings, it has been perceived as a excellent health food in Japan.

Re: healthy/medicinal foods
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 4:21 AMYeah, you beat me to it!
>>>Garlic was originally a native plant of many thousands of years ago. Evidence of it has been found in caves inhabited more than 10,000 years ago.
Medicinal prescriptions were found chiseled into a clay Sumerian tablet that was more than 3,000 years old. Garlic is a key ingredient to a wide variety of recipes, and is quickly becoming regarded as a natural method to prevent heart disease and cancer - it is after all the second oldest medicine in the world.
I just planted some!

Re: healthy/medicinal foods
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 4:19 AMKonnyaku is processed into a thin brick of a stiff-jelly like stuff.
You slice it and put it into soups or stir fries.
'Kenchin' would be my favorite soup. www.bento.com/trt-vegsoup.html
'Oden' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oden
& other varieties of 'nabe' are good too. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nabemono
I like to add it to my 'kinpira' stir fry. www.norecipes.com/2009/04/1...e-burdock/
I am out of touch with what you can buy in the states but my friend's Father, living in upstate NY, can buy the processed konyaku and includes it in his diet combatting diabetes. -

Re: healthy/medicinal foods
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 4:36 PMoh, my pleasure.
It is certainly a kind of 'strange' food. I can't imagine someone eating it for the first time and saying, "wow, this is great!". Health factors can influence ones palette though. Do more research for recipes.
I heard cinnamon tablets may be of help too.
Hope the best. -
