Where did butter tarts (or pecan/raisin) tarts originate from? They are sooo good but I can't seem to find any history on them..

My mom used to tell me that pecan pies came from rum pies. The pecan farmers needed an outlet for their nuts, so they started putting pecans into older-than-the-hills rum pies and marketed them as pecan pies. That's why pecan pies are traditionally made with rum.

(I'm ultra-strict about not drinking any alcohol, but I keep a bottle of Bacardi's solely for baking pecan pies. Fie on rum flavoring!)
